The Wx Program!

What are we all about?

For the past three years, Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority has worked closely with many Federal and State Agencies to provide weatherization services to the Southeast Alaska Communities. The Weatherization Program for Alaska is a jointly funded operation involving but not limited to the U.S. Department of Energy and Alaska Housing Finance Corporation to provide critical home energy and weatherization repairs. Referred to by our staff as the Wx Program, we've combined a wide approach to achieving energy awareness and outreach by helping to establish legs of the Wx Program that target specific needs. Needs such as...

  • Aid in providing state of the art courseware for Weatherization Professionals such as technicians, inspectors, workers and administrators so we can duplicate our efforts in other communities and maximize effectiveness.
  • Develop/Provide resources to clients in our communities as education outreach to teach energy saving habits, simple DIY projects for energy improvement and overall energy consumption awareness with the goal of reducing consumption.
  • Provide direct weatherization repairs and upgrades to qualified homes including elderly, handicapped and multidwelling homes as well as single family homes to reduce or eliminate unnecessary heat loss.

THRHA is working proactively to achieve some very critical goals for our Southeast Alaska families with the dramatic rise of fuel costs. Some of these goals involve reducation and reevaluation of existing energy plans and in some cases, conduct radical course changes in order to achieve community survivability. Our current partnership objectives include

  • Stabilize costs, we know that the cost of oil will continually increase, we must strive to keep THRHA utility costs neutral at minimum and reduce costs for the future.
  • Sustainable communities can be achieved by lowering the cost of energy that will provide the means for independent household sufficiency and community-wide economic development.
  • Reduce consumption of foreign oil over the long-term resulting in rural community and household self-sufficiency.

THRHA recognizes that we're facing an uphill and dire battle and we absolutely cannot fail. The consequences to the communties of Southeast Alaska will be devastating. But we can't do this alone, it's also essential that communities work with us to better understand that energy consumption habits must change now! What seemed so trivial in the past in terms of simple acts such as turning lights off, utilizing zone heating concepts, turning down the hot water tank, and bundling up during the critical cold months are now vital strategies in achieving a stop gap while THRHA continues to work with agencies and the communities on ways we can truly achieve short term energy efficiency and long term energy independence.
