Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority (THRHA) is pleased to announce the award of a top-off grant for up to $780,000 from the Rasmuson Foundation for the expansion and renovation of the Klawock Senior Supportive Housing facility on Prince of Wales Island.

This funding, in conjunction with a Denali grant and other HUD and AHFC supplemental funding will enable the THRHA to triple the square footage of the Senior Center. The expansion and renovation, includes eight new fully accessible two-bedroom units; a complete renovation of the existing ten one-bedroom units with new cabinets, counters, appliances, fixtures, flooring and widening doorways to bedrooms and bathrooms; a new open and spacious lobby; fireplace; accessible drinking fountain; installation of an elevator; new drive-up covered entrance; new laundry facilities on each floor; expansion of the day/lunch room including a commercial kitchen, increased storage, offices for the senior lunch program and community nurse; a new computer/reading room; a completely new mechanical system; covered carport for Senior Services van; maintenance shop; and most importantly a new attitude towards senior apartments and group living.

“Without help from the Rasmuson Foundation we would not have been able to fully renovate, increase the number of units, and upgrade accessibility and comfort at this high level,” said Dr. Blake Y. Kazama, President and CEO, Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority. “This facility will definitely help improve the quality of life for our seniors.

Established in 1973, THRHA is Southeast Alaska’s largest non-profit, public housing provider. It currently owns and operates nearly 1,000 rental, homeownership and senior units. Its mission is to provide affordable housing opportunities and solutions for all Southeast Alaskans.
